When Rugby referee Nigel Owens had to deal with a player who began complaining about his decisions a little bit too much (and in an un-Rugby-like manner), he immediately set things straight:
I don’t think we’ve met before, but I’m the referee on this field, not you. Do your job and I’ll do mine. This is not soccer.
An international referee since 2005, Owens has officiated an unprecedented 71 international matches, including the World Cup Final 2015 in Twickenham, six European finals and several other national matches. Outstanding refereeing skills and a exemplary character, quick wit and full control of as well as respect for both game and players at all times are combined in that one person who can easily be described as one of Rugby Union’s best ambassadors and probably the most respected referee across all sports.
The MBE (“Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire”) for his “services to sport” is a well-deserved honour for him.
Llongyfarchiadau, Ref Owens!
